2205 Duplex Stainless Steel Wire Mesh – Alloy Overview
2205 duplex stainless steel wire mesh is the most extensively used duplex stainless steel alloy in the industrial wire cloth world. As a duplex stainless steel alloy, 2205 duplex exhibits double the yield strength of most standard austenitic stainless steel alloys (i.e. T-316L). Additionally, 2205 duplex stainless steel wire cloth has superior corrosion resistance properties vs. T-316L wire cloth as a result of its higher chromium, nitrogen, and molybdenum content. If the superior corrosion resistance and strength of 2205 duplex is not required, T-316L is often substituted due to its lower cost. Some characteristics of 2205 duplex stainless steel wire cloth which dictate its use are:
- Duplex stainless steel (both ferritic and austenitic).
- Less frequently used stainless steel alloy in the industrial wire cloth world (T-304 & T-316 being the most common).
- Magnetic in all conditions.
- Withstands outdoor exposure without rusting.
- Good fatigue strength & excellent corrosion resistance in severe industrial and chemical settings.
- Best used in temperatures below 570°F (undergoes embrittlement at higher temperatures).
- Easily welded, more difficult to cut and form than T-316L (thus, higher cutting forces are required).
Industries & Applications
2205 duplex stainless steel wire cloth is primarily used in chemical/petrochemical, food processing, and oil field/refinery industries. Additional industries and applications which commonly use 2205 duplex stainless steel wire cloth include:
- Architectural (seashore/urban areas)
- Biofuel Plants
- Boat/Yacht Fittings
- High Chloride Environments
- Liquid Filtration & Particle Separation
- Marine Applications
- Power Plant
- Textile
- Wastewater Treatment
