Hard Drawn Steel Wire Mesh – Alloy Overview
Hard drawn steel wire mesh is one of the most basic and affordable high carbon steel wire mesh alloys. “Hard drawn” simply means the high carbon steel has been drawn through the die to the desired diameter and undergone no additional processing or tempering. Given its simple processing, hard drawn steel is less expensive than oil tempered steel, but does not provide the same strength; it is not intended for applications requiring exposure to high or low temperatures, impact loading, or shock. Primarily comprised of iron, hard drawn steel also contains small percentages of carbon (0.65%), manganese (0.8% – which increases its strength), phosphorous (0.02%), sulfur (0.025%), and silicon (0.25%). Some characteristics of hard drawn steel wire cloth which dictate its use are:
- Hard drawn high carbon steel alloy.
- Relatively low cost and high strength material.
- Inferior strength vs. oil tempered steel.
- Magnetic in all conditions.
- Not corrosion resistant; rusts in most atmospheric environments.
- Protective coatings can be applied to improve resistance.
- Can be cut, formed, and welded.
Industries & Applications
Hard drawn steel wire mesh is primarily used in wire cloth screens where superior strength and material lifespan are not critical properties. It is often used in agriculture applications and shopping carts. Additionally, hard drawn steel wire cloth is commonly used in the following industries and applications:
- Automobile
- Baskets
- General Industry
- Shelving
Common Aliases
Hard drawn steel is also commonly referred to as:
- UNS K06501
- Hard Drawn MB Spring Steel
- Cold Drawn Steel
