Oil Tempered Steel Wire Mesh – Alloy Overview

Oil tempered steel wire mesh is high carbon steel wire that has been specially tempered to provide greater strength along with extra abrasion resistance. The oil tempering process involves heating high carbon wire to extreme temperatures followed by cooling it with oil. This process allows the wire to be strengthened (without becoming brittle) while maintaining its flexibility. As such, oil tempered wire cloth is used under the most severe, abrasive conditions as it possesses greater strength than normal high carbon steel. Primarily comprised of iron, oil tempered steel also contains small percentages of carbon (0.7%), manganese (0.75% – which increases its strength), phosphorous (0.02%), sulfur (0.025%), and silicon (0.25%). Magnetic in all conditions.
Not corrosion resistant; rusts in most atmospheric environments.
